There are three states/stages in this model:

Stage I – spacious, settled, connected

In Stage I, the person feels flexible, relaxed, grounded, and calm. They are connected to their feelings, their body, and other people. When in the state it is possible to envision a more expansive future. This is the state of the lowest stress.

Stage II – pressure, mobilize, react

In Stage II, the person feels activated, hyper-vigilant, physically tight, and is in motion. There is some numbing, this is a directive, authoritative, productive stage.

Stage III – numb, shut-down, disconnect

In Stage III, the person feels hopeless role and apathetic. Everything winds down to a stop.

All states are protective, but we are not meant to be activated or numb for a long time, because a lot of energy is wasted when the system over-responds. Humans are wired to over-respond, better safe than sorry. Resilience is a flexible, lowest effective, stress response.

Ask yourself: Is this stage helpful to me right now?

Tools to move from a higher stage to a lower one, if the current stage is not helpful. (If de-escalating does not work, it may be that the current stress level is appropriate to the situation.):

– Tune into your body, notice what is feeling better than before.
– To lower your heart rate, make a few exhales longer than the inhale.
– Sweep one arm up the other, then repeat on the other side.
– Orienting, notice something you see, hear, or smell in your environment, focusing on details such as color and texture.

Try these tools for about 30 seconds, and it is normal for them not to always work.
